Verdict of the Advantages and Disadvantages of Free Trade Free trade gives countries of any size an opportunity to create new economic opportunities for themselves. It is a way to increase choice at the domestic level, control costs, and encourage innovation in the targeted industries and commercial sectors. The arguments are quite complex, so I'll try to explain in a few sentences. Free trade creates value as a whole for the economy. When two states engage in trade, both sides are able to focus on what they're good at and become more efficient at producing value. In economics, this is called comparative advantage.

Many economists support free trade. However, in some circumstances, there are arguments in favour of trade restrictions. These include when developing economies need to develop infant industries and develop their economy. Free trade and free markets are essentially about making trade easier by allowing the market to balance needs, supply and demand. Within a nation, it can be a positive engine for development. With the Cold War over, politicians, economists and others have been promoting unfettered free trade and free market ideology, pushing it to an even wider international arena to facilitate international trade.
